Student of the Month November 2019: Kandice Murray




WHEN DID YOU START YOGA AND WHERE?
Yoga Tribe is my original home.  I started about 1 1/2 years ago.  It is quite a funny story.  I had just finished a gym workout and was very hungry so I had stopped at a Trader Joe’s.  My wonderful friend, Karinna, calls me and asks “Whatchya doin’?!”.  I said I just finished a workout and I’m shopping.  It was kind of loud at the store and I heard her say “Come to yogurt with me!!”.  I say, “Okay!” because who can refuse yogurt after a hard workout?  She replies “But we need to get there before 11 am!  It’s very important we get there before 11.”.  I thought it strange but she works with clients on a schedule so I figure she needed to be prompt.  I drive home and she’s already in my driveway waving at me to get in her car.  I jump in and she says “I’m so excited you are coming with me!!”.  Then she proceeds to tell me that she got water for me which I thought strange too since they have water at the yogurt place.  As we approach an intersection, she turns around and says “…and I have a mat and towel for you!!” very excitedly.  At that point I realize we weren’t going for yogurt, we were going for yoga!!  Well I managed to get through the class after I overcame my shock and the heat.  It turns out my first class was Shannon’s advanced hot vinyasa flow.  Needless to say that afternoon I took a very long nap but I never turned back and here I am today.  
 
HOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA?
I attend 2-3 times a week as I integrate my gym workouts with yoga.  Although I find myself doing yoga breathing during the day especially when I am particularly anxious.  So, I guess I actually integrate yoga in my every day life.  
 
WHY DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA?
Yoga challenges me in a way that I feel is rewarding.  I used to have a misconception that yoga is chill and relaxing because it looks easy from the uninformed.  I find that my mind is a whirlwind and the practice of yoga helps me to focus and be the one to control my thoughts to influence my movements.  I can take this into my everyday life too. 

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY BENEFITS YOU EXPERIENCE?
I love the physical benefits because I am so much more bend-y than I used to be!  I didn’t think I would ever regain that youthful flexibility but the practice really helps with that.  Mentally I love the time I get to focus on myself.  As a group experience, I love that we are all challenging ourselves and we’re doing it together without complaint.  There’s a good energy that arises from that.  
 
WHAT IS YOUR MOST CHALLENGING POSTURE? WHY?
The Boat Pose!  I can’t maintain this pose.  Anyone that watches me will laugh because I often end up like a JuneBug that has fallen on its back and can’t get up as it rocks back and forth trying to upright itself.  
 
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE POSTURE?
The Tree Pose.  I love how I feel rooted and strong.  It’s the pose that makes me feel centered.  
 
HOW HAS YOUR HOT YOGA PRACTICE IMPACTED OR CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
I never considered myself a person that would practice yoga as it was outside of my comfort zone and hot yoga was beyond.  Now that I’ve been practicing, it has opened up new worlds of experiences for me.  There are new challenges and new achievements.  There are new ways to manage stress.  Mostly, I am thankful for the Yoga Tribe for the teachers as they have pushed me to live past that comfort zone.
