Student of the Month May 2014: Hamid Kalhor and Mohsen Ghaneian

 

Hamid Kalhor

When did you start doing yoga and where?
I started practicing yoga in August 2011 at Huntington Beach Hot Yoga/Yoga Tribe.

How often do you practice yoga?
I intend to practice four times per week but if not four, three times for sure.

Why do you practice yoga?

I started practicing yoga because I was supposed to get a knee replacement. My fear of being unable to play soccer anymore led me to Huntington Beach Hot Yoga as it was recommended to me by my chiropractor.

What are the primary benefits you experience from your yoga practice?
Now, after nearly two years, I feel completely different than before: I can go up and down the stairs normally, after a long, long time, I still play soccer, now with less pain, and on top of that, my migraines are at a minimum, so I am a believer!

What is your most challenging posture and why?
The postures most challenging for me are fixed firm and back release. These are the most challenging for me as I cannot bend my knees.

What is your favorite posture and why?
My favorite posture is standing head-to-knee because it takes away the pressure I hold in my head and neck.

How has your hot yoga practice changed your life?
My hot yoga practice has made me more relaxed and calm. I have now learned to take life as it comes and if you put your mind into something you can accomplish it. But with that, I have learned to accept that sometimes your body does not allow you to do some things. I have learned to stay calm under pressure and live in the moment.

Mohsen Ghaneian

When did you start doing yoga and where?
I started doing yoga in February 2012 at Yoga Tribe.  My friend, Hamid, convinced me to try and I've fallen in love with it.

How often do you practice yoga?

I typically go about twice a week, but I try to go more if possible.  I'd love to go every day!

Why do you practice yoga?
I initially started yoga as a way to work out and to help me with my Racquet Ball.  However, once I started I was also motivated to go to yoga for the meditation aspect.  Work can be very stressful, but yoga keeps me grounded.

What are the primary benefits you experience from your yoga practice?

Since starting yoga I have noticed a difference in my mood.  I'm happier and calmer.  I also feel more physically capable.  I've gained a lot of flexibility and I hope to continue to improve.

What is your most challenging posture?
Standing-separate leg

What is your favorite posture?
Savasana

How has your hot yoga practice changed your life?

Yoga has allowed me to better manage the stresses of everyday life, which has improved my overall mood.  My body feels younger and I feel healthier physically and mentally.
