Student of the Month February 2018: Brett Baird



WHEN DID YOU START YOGA AND WHERE?
I actually started Yoga with Jason at this studio back when he first opened Hot Yoga years ago.  I took a bit of a hiatus, but I am glad to be back practicing again with Yoga Tribe.
 
HOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA?
I try to practice yoga at least twice a week.  I am hoping to increase the frequency since I really enjoy the benefits I get from it.
 
WHY DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA?
After many years of playing basketball, two Achilles tendon repairs, arthroscopic knee surgery and in need of knee replacement, my hamstrings & hips extremely tight so I'm slowly trying to break down scar tissue & increase my flexibility. I also enjoy the detoxifying aspect and the way I feel afterward. 
 
WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY BENEFITS YOU EXPERIENCE?
While I do enjoy the physical benefits that I get from practicing yoga like deceased lower back pain & sciatica pain, I also am able to gain a sharper focus and stress relief.  I find that yoga helps me slow down and be more mindful, creating relaxation and  calmness. It’s forced break from my daily responsibilities that is a much needed from time to time.
 
WHAT IS YOUR MOST CHALLENGING POSTURE? WHY?
Bow Pulling is my most challenging posture.  I just don’t have the flexibly to get into it.  My goal is to be able to pull it off one day.
 
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE POSTURE?
Hands down Savasana is my favorite posture.  I don’t mean to brag, but I would qualify as expert level in Savasana.  I was very disappointed that Jason didn’t ask me to be the “model” on the wall of the studio for that pose. 
 
HOW HAS YOUR HOT YOGA PRACTICE IMPACTED OR CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
Hot Yoga allows me to have a more healthy lifestyle both mentally & physically.  I feel challenged in both aspects each & every time I step into the studio.  Once I step out of the studio my mind & body feel refreshed.
