Student of the Month December 2018: Ted and Amy Brennan

WHEN DID YOU START YOGA AND WHERE?
We started together at Yoga Tribe (then Huntington Beach Hot Yoga) in 2008. Neither one of us had done more than 1-2 classes prior to that. We’ve been members off and on since then, and have really dedicated to a steady practice the last 3 years.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA?
Between Hot Yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Yogalates and Yin classes we each try to do between 5 and 6 classes a week.

WHY DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA?
For the health benefits, both mental and physical. Doing yoga together has strengthened our bond as a couple as well. We started together when we were dating and have kept it up in our married life.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY BENEFITS YOU EXPERIENCE?
TED: From the first time I tried Hot Yoga I noticed the benefits right away. I had lots more energy as well as strength. I also slept better at night. From a mental perspective I noticed how my thinking was a lot sharper and clearer.
AMY: I have a clearer mind and focus to my ongoing activities. I enjoy doing classes at night because it helps me sleep better and I know after a long day of work a great evening yoga class awaits me.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST CHALLENGING POSTURE? WHY?
TED: Frankly, I find everything I do in the studio a challenge. Even stretching at the end of class. I’ve never come to class and experienced an “easy” time but that’s what I like about the classes at Yoga Tribe, I’m challenged from the minute I walk in the door.
AMY: Anything requiring being on one foot – my balance has never been a strength of mine so anytime I have to rely on that I am challenged.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE POSTURE?
TED: Early in hot yoga class where when we do the forward fold (as part of Half Moon). At this point in class my body is starting to get used to the heat and I can feel my muscles adjust to the temperature. As difficult as class can be I know at this point that my body will appreciate it in the end.
AMY: In Hot Yoga it is Standing Separate Leg Head to Knee Pose, which in Vinyasa Flow is Pyramid pose, because I love the deepness of the stretch. I also enjoy Warrior 2 because it’s such a focused pose and a celebration of having made it through chaturanga.

HOW HAS YOUR HOT YOGA PRACTICE IMPACTED OR CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
TED: Overall, I’d say that I’m better physically as well as mentally. Not only do I have increased physical stamina but my mind is sharper as well.
AMY: Yoga has given me so much – focus, strength, agility, insight, community, and so much more. I recently completed the Yoga Tribe Vinyasa Flow teacher training and I was in awe every single day of how much more I was learning about yoga and how my yoga community was growing. I have an ongoing desire to showcase how yoga benefits everyone and is for all body sizes.
