Student of the Month April 2019: Jolie Arentz

WHEN DID YOU START YOGA AND WHERE?
I started yoga back in September at Yoga Tribe.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA?
I practice 3-4 days a week.

WHY DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA?
I practice to help with my lower back pain. That's been an ongoing issue for me due to scoliosis, and also an equestrian-related injury from my late teen years.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY BENEFITS YOU EXPERIENCE?
I enjoy the detoxifying effect of hot yoga, and the calming effect it has after a stressful workday. I also have much less back pain in the mornings, and I'm able to balance much better than I could before starting my practice.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST CHALLENGING POSTURE? WHY?
Standing Bow would have to be the most challenging posture for me. The balancing has gotten much easier, but my flexibility still isn't where I'd like it to be. However, I know with enough practice, it can be!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE POSTURE?
Pigeon is my favorite pose. The stretch I feel in my glutes and the surrounding muscles is EVERYTHING!

HOW HAS YOUR HOT YOGA PRACTICE IMPACTED OR CHANGED YOUR LIFE?
Before I started practicing, I was stuck in a rut of feeling depressed, lethargic, and unappealing, which is not the norm for me. I didn't feel good physically, mentally, or emotionally. I was actually having a pretty rough time just functioning on a daily basis. My sister, Cherise, invited me to join her at a class one night, so I signed up for the 20-day new student deal. After the first class, I slept better than I had in quite some time. I woke up feeling better than I had in even longer. My mood was better throughout the day, and I felt really good about myself. In continuing my practice, I've bounced back to being my usual sassy, vivacious, energetic self. I feel empowered, and I love what I see when I look in the mirror every day. I also stopped needing, or even wanting, coffee to get me through the day! Yoga has helped me feel more centered, focused, and driven to pursue better things in all aspects of my life.
