Staff Member of the Month June 2019: Cat McCourt & Emma Akers

WHEN DID YOU START YOGA AND WHERE?

EMMA: I started yoga 3 years ago at the ymca gym.

CAT: My first time taking a yoga class was at Corepower Yoga a few years ago but have only started practicing consistently at Yoga Tribe since January of 2019.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA?

EMMA: I try and practice yoga 2-3 times a week.

CAT: 2-3 times per week. But I want to try going at least 4 times per week.

WHY DO YOU PRACTICE YOGA?

EMMA: I practice yoga because it helps me feel balanced, helps keep my head clear and it allows me to challenge my body into doing things I thought I wasn’t capable of.

CAT: It’s the best way for me to relieve any stress, it challenges me both physically and mentally by forcing my mind body and spirit to work together and it grounds me by taking the time to connect with myself on my mat.

WHAT ARE THE PRIMARY BENEFITS YOU EXPERIENCE?

EMMA: Yoga has made me feel strong, confident and level headed.

CAT: Mental clarity, spending time improving yourself and growing stronger through the challenges of each pose. Also the community that yoga brings together and the friendships built around it.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST CHALLENGING POSTURE? WHY?

EMMA: My most challenging posture is the crow pose because I haven't figured out how to stabilize my legs on top of my arms.

CAT: Chin stand because I have a hard time balancing and getting my legs up in one fluid motion.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE POSTURE?

EMMA: Either warrior 3 or tree pose.

CAT: Tree Pose

HOW HAS YOUR HOT YOGA PRACTICE IMPACTED OR CHANGED YOUR LIFE?

EMMA: It has allowed me to be more appreciative of my body and continues to push me to try new things. I was really nervous to start hot yoga but now that I know what I am capable of, I constantly remind myself that I can do whatever I set my mind to.

CAT: It has helped my to grow as a person and I feel like I have finally found something that I truly enjoy that is beyond going to the gym and trying to get fit. It has made me grow stronger physically but mentally as well and it has made me get to know myself and my body a lot better through the challenge of each pose and the experience of flowing through each pose. It is an exercise that is beyond any sport that I have ever played or any other form of exercise that I have ever done. I felt like I always worked out to get in shape but with hot yoga it is about so much more than that.
Hot yoga has benefited every aspect of my life and I look forward to going to class and learning the ways my mind and body work together to take on the challenges of yoga.
